Preface to the Fourth Edition 2008.
It is our pleasure to present the fourth edition of Lymphedema: Diagnosis and Therapy. It has been 12 years since publication of the first edition of the book and six years since the most recent update, the third edition.
The myriad of new developments in all areas of lymphedema research and treatment made it necessary to update the book to include the latest findings and innovations. This entailed a complete revision and expansion of the text, illustrations and literature. The English version of the fourth edition is both a translation and further update of the German original.
One example is the section on direct lymphography, which has been considerably shortened in keeping with its decreasing role in lymphedema diagnostics. In contrast, a separate section has been dedicated to magnetic resonance lymphography. The ability to assess even the tiniest lymph node metastases by MRI, a crucial element in exact tumor staging, has made this diagnostic method highly significant.
New insights into anatomy, standardized lymphoscintigraphic function tests, lipedema and liposuction are all included in the new chapters and sections on these topics, for which we were able to engage authors who are experts in their fields with years of clinical and research experience. These new insights are also reflected in the reworked chapters, which feature more than 100 new color illustrations and additional tables, as well as a number of revised and improved illustrations. This English edition also includes a chapter on bioimpedance, focusing on recent research results and application in lymphedema assessment.
We are particularly grateful to our co-authors from Germany, the United States and Australia for their tireless commitment and to everyone else who contributed to this edition. Special appreciation is directed toward Dr. Karen Leube for her translation of the updated and revised German texts and to Kathryn McKillip Thrift, B.S., CLT-LANA, Errin Killion and Anna Petropoulos-Weissleder, MD, for their assistance in editing and proofreading the manuscript. We also thank the employees of Viavital Verlag for their continued insightful cooperation and support.
